My Interpretations of the 12-Steps

Disclaimer: I do not represent any particular 12-step program, nor do I speak for the program as a whole. This is my own interpretation of the 12-steps and a suggested way to look at them if you are struggling with any part of the 12-steps.

I was thinking of how many people don’t even give 12-step programs a try, or leave once they realize it’s a spiritual based program. I think there are a lot of misunderstandings about the 12-step program, particularly with people who may have had bad experiences with certain meetings, but I would hope they would give other meetings a try before throwing in the towel.

I wanted to start a series of blog posts explaining my interpretation of the 12-steps. Keep in mind that these are only my opinions, and others may interpret them very different. But I know when I was struggling with the concept of a Higher Power, looking at the Steps in this way really helped me overcome those roadblocks.

So if you are interested, feel free to read my interpretation of the 12-steps.

Step 1 (Admitting we are powerless over [addiction] and that our lives had become unmanageable.)
Step 2
(Came to believe a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.)
Step 3 (Turned our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him.)
Step 4 (Coming soon.)
Step 5 (Coming soon.)
Step 6 (Coming soon.)
Step 7 (Coming soon.)
Step 8 (Coming soon.)
Step 9 (Coming soon.)
Step 10 (Coming soon.)
Step 11 (Coming soon.)
Step 12 (Coming soon.)

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog! These step interpretations are so helpful! I’m just now starting to contemplate working the steps, but it feels overwhelming for me sometimes. It’s really good to hear another person’s perspective on the steps and how they have helped in recovery.
